Instructions
Click the Avast! icon in the notification area of the taskbar. This opens the user interface.
Select "Real-Time Shields."
Click "P2P Shield." If the Protection Status at the top of
the screen reads "RUNNING," the P2P scanner is on. If it isn't running,
click "Start." This shield checks downloads automatically from the
majority of P2P, or peer-to-peer network, applications.
Click "Expert Settings." Click to place a check mark in any unmarked boxes to direct Avast! to scan each of the file types.
Click "IM Shield." If the Protection status reads "RUNNING,"
you're set. Otherwise, click "Start." This directs Avast! to scan

Tips & Warnings
Place a check mark in all the Real-time shields to turn them on.
Click "Summary" at the top of the user interface to check the status of your Avast! settings.

Scan files
you've already downloaded before opening or installing them. Right-click
on the file, and click the Avast! icon and scan command on the menu.
